'I am calling it off'; Arijit Singh announces retirement from playback singing, fans shocked

MUMBAI: In a move that has surprised fans as well as the Bollywood music industry, renowned singer Arijit Singh has announced his retirement from playback singing. The announcement was made through his social media platforms, where the singer stated that he will no longer accept new playback assignments for films.

In his post, Arijit wrote, “Hello, Happy New Year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much love over the years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not going to take any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I’m calling it off. It has been a wonderful journey.”

However, the singer clarified that he is not stepping away from music altogether. Arijit said he will continue his musical journey through independent music, cover songs, live concerts, and other musical projects.

Arijit Singh rose to fame with the chart-topping song ‘Tum Hi Ho’ from Aashiqui 2. Over the years, he has sung more than 400 songs in Bollywood and has received several prestigious awards, including two National Film Awards. He was also conferred with the Padma Shri in 2025. He has also sung in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. He gained attention through a reality show and entered the playback singing field in 2009. He has also worked as a music director.
