'If a woman becomes president, all women will support her'; was asked by many to contest AMMA elections, says Urvashi

CHENNAI: Actress Urvashi’s comments questioning the selection process for the National Awards have already sparked considerable attention. Meanwhile, she also shared her views on the upcoming election of office bearers for AMMA, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists. Urvashi stated that if a woman assumes the position of president of AMMA, all women will support her. She added that those capable of managing the organisation well should win, and if the winners fail to properly utilise the funds, they must be held accountable.

“Those who can lead the organisation well should win. I was urged to contest, but I did not, as the circumstances were different,” Urvashi said. “I will come to Kochi to cast my vote. Whoever wins must ensure proper utilisation of funds - otherwise, we will question them. Mammootty and Mohanlal do not need an official position to lead; they will continue to support the office bearers regardless,” she added.

Urvashi made these comments in an interview given to a media outlet, where she also criticised the criteria used to decide the National Film Awards. She questioned why the Best Actress award was not shared and demanded that the jury clarify on what basis the performances were evaluated.

“Why was Vijayaraghavan chosen as Best Supporting Actor? How did they assess his performance against that of Shah Rukh Khan? What parameters did they use to weigh the differences? The film Aadujeevitham was ignored completely. My film J Baby was also submitted for Best Actress consideration -did the jury even watch it? Shouldn’t these questions be raised? Honourable Union Minister Suresh Gopi should investigate and clarify this," she said.
