Samyuktha Varma, who once had so much sway in the Malayalam industry, left acting after her marriage to actor Biju Menon. In recent times, Samyuktha became active on social media, opening doors for interaction with the public. The actress had previously revealed in an interview that she faced criticism from the audience for playing certain characters.
An old interview of Samyuktha Varma is now doing the rounds on social media. The actress said that her character in ‘Mazha’ faced criticism from the audience as they took offence over the female character heading to meet her lover just after her husband’s death.
“Mazha was one of the finest works I did, and it was written by Madhavikutty. Many female audiences could not digest the role as it included a scene where the married woman went to meet her lover after her husband’s death.
Similar was the criticism for the film Meghamalhar. For Malayalees, these are forbidden territories where cinema should not explore. I faced many criticisms for doing the role. Many questioned the reason behind my selecting such roles. My response to them was “ I am Samyuktha Varma and not the person you saw on screen”. There are women around us from all walks of life, and I just represented a few on screen,” said Samyuktha.
