GANDHINAGAR: A 65-year-old man in Gujarat was found to have a blood group other than the four known blood groups A, B, O and AB. The said man admitted to a hospital in Gujarat's Rajkot for heart problems was found to have EMM negative blood group. This is the first case in the country. There are also 375 types of antigens in which EMM is high. But the blood group with high antigen content is very rare.
Those with EMM-negative blood type have some limitations. They cannot donate or receive blood. Dr. Shanmukh Joshi of Samarpan Blood Donor Centre said that the 65-year-old's blood group was identified in preparation for heart surgery. The blood group was confirmed to be EMM negative after the blood was sent to the US after it did not match with any of the blood groups.
