CHENNAI: Vijay's TVK government won the trust vote in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Vijay got the support of 144 out of 234 MLAs. 25 MLAs from AIADMK defected and stood with Vijay. DMK and DMDK, four PMK MLAs and one BJP MLA abstained from the trust vote. DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin said in the Assembly that he would not participate in the trust vote.

TVK, which was elected as the single largest party with 108 seats in the assembly elections, did not have the absolute majority required to form the government. After days of uncertainty, Vijay took oath and assumed office with the support of the winning alliance partners of the DMK, including the Congress. TVK had secured the support of 120 MLAs with the support of the Congress, CPM, CPI, VCK and the Muslim League.
