LUCKNOW: A youth sustained serious injuries after his toilet exploded. The incident happened at house number C-364 in sector 36 in Uttar Pradesh’s Greater Noida. The youth identified as Ashu Nagar suffered burns on his face and body. He has been admitted to a government hospital in Greater Noida. Doctors said the youth suffered 35 % burns.
When he pressed the flush button, the toilet seat exploded with a loud noise and triggered the fire. His father said Ashu wasn’t using any mobile phone or electronic gadget at that time. The cause is believed to be poor plumbing.
The air condition and other electronic equipment were working normally. The family suspects that methane gas may have accumulated inside the toilet leading to the explosion. ‘The pipes here are not very old, but haven’t cleaned in years. There is a possibility of gas accumulating in the pipes,’ said Harinder Bhatti, a resident of Sector 35. A chemistry professor said that methane can also accumulate in the sewage lines in the small bathroom. A P Verma, senior manager of Greater Noida Authority, said the drains in Sector 35 are clean and some internal problem inside the house could have caused the explosion.
