MALAPPURAM: Tension flared at Changaramkulam after a group of DYFI activists stormed into a police station and freed a man arrested for allegedly assaulting police officers. The man, identified as Suhail (36) of Alamcode, was taken out of custody around Sunday evening.
The incident stemmed from a dispute between private bus staff and car passengers at Perumpilavu around 10:30 p.m on Saturday. Following the clash, locals gathered at the Changaramkulam highway junction, blocked the bus, and disrupted traffic. When police intervened, officers were allegedly attacked, leading to the arrest of Suhail and the bus driver.
Later, a group of DYFI workers reached the station demanding Suhail’s release. Despite attempts at mediation by Tirur DySP, the activists led by Edappal area secretary Siddique Neeliyad created a commotion inside the station and eventually took Suhail away, police said. Cases have been registered against 10 identifiable individuals for assaulting police, along with additional cases based on complaints filed by the car passengers and bus staff.
