KANNUR: Five more CPM workers have been arrested in connection with the violence that broke out in Panoor after the election results came out. CPM workers Sharath, Sreeji, Ashwanth, Shreyas and Athul were nabbed from Mysore. Nearly 50 CPM workers have been booked in connection with the incident.
They have been booked for various offences, including vandalising a police vehicle. Violence had broken out in various parts of the Panoor region following the CPM's defeat in the local body elections. The attacks were carried out using machetes and explosive substances.
The incident took place on Saturday evening in Panur, when CPM workers allegedly attacked a UDF victory procession using machetes. The attackers entered the houses of League workers and swung machetes at some of them. Several UDF workers were injured in stone-pelting incidents in Paradu town.
The victory procession was held in Paradu town as the UDF managed to win the Kunnoorparamba panchayat after 25 years. During the celebration, CPM workers allegedly arrived in vehicles and charged at UDF supporters. They also assaulted people using sticks and vandalised the League office. The attackers reportedly barged into the houses of UDF workers, threatened some with machetes, and damaged cars and bikes. To avoid identification, they had covered their faces with party flags.
