NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on the National Medical Commission (NMC) for withdrawing the additional seats allotted to KMCT medical college in Kozhikode. The Supreme Court rejected the NMC's plea to quash the Kerala High Court verdict which took a stand in favour of the functioning of the college.
Five lakhs each have to be deposited with the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) and the Supreme Court Bar Association's Advocates' Welfare Fund. The bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan observed that the National Medical Commission should function in a fair manner.
The college was allowed to increase the number of medical seats from 150 to 250 in the academic year 2023-24 but the order was withdrawn later.
