THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With medical undergraduate and postgraduate admissions being made through the Centre's unified counselling, the state rank list will be issued by the Medical Counseling Committee under the Union Ministry of Health.
At present, the rank list is being prepared by the Entrance Commissioner based on the NEET rank for 85 percent of the seats in the state. From now on admissions will be purely on a merit basis from the central list. A single registration will now suffice for all India and state allotments. No more separate applications for state quota.
Apart from MBBS, admission to BDS and medical allied courses was also from the NEET rank list. The National Dental Commission has started the process for uniform counselling for BDS and MDS admissions as well.
Admission to allied courses like Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Siddha etc. will require separate registration and rank list in the state. Documents as per state norms will have to be provided. There will be no difference in the existing central and state quotas.
There is a delay in admissions at present as central and state counseling are conducted separately. Admission can be completed in one month with unified counselling.
Smart students can join the best college
If a student applies in the All India list, the toppers will get a chance in the college they give as their first option, but those who fall below the rank will only get the allotment to colleges in other states.
Many go to colleges in other states due to delays in allotment in the state. With that, those who rank lower than them will get admission to the best colleges through the state list. Such issues will be solved now. Since allotment to both is done simultaneously people can choose the best college.
