THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Digital monitoring will be implemented to ensure the efficiency of water distribution systems. This digital system belongs to French-based Suez India Limited, which has been contracted for a project implemented in Kochi with the assistance of an ADB loan. The project aims to monitor and efficiently operate water treatment plants and distribution networks using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).

In addition to system monitoring and control through SCADA, Suez will also provide automated meter reading and RoPAs digitalisation for industrial and commercial customers. The contract is for the modernisation and maintenance of the water supply system in Kochi for 10 years with the assistance of an ADB loan of Rs 2511 crore. The Water Authority is responsible for the supervision.

Following the Kochi project, the government and the Water Authority also initiated steps to implement a project to modernise water supply in Thiruvananthapuram. The plan is to set up a 120 MLD water treatment plant in Neyyar and establish a water supply network to the city and Vizhinjam.

The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Digital Monitoring System is used to monitor and control water treatment plants and distribution networks by detecting and issuing warnings for technical problems. In addition, it can detect and issue alerts for problems such as pump and valve malfunctions, leakage, pressure drop, and poor water quality. Suez is responsible for routine operations, maintenance, leak detection and repair, and complaint resolution in the water distribution system. Meter reading, billing, and revenue collection will be handled by the Water Authority itself.

  • 1,46,500 service connections and water distribution networks will be replaced
