THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a significant development for the state, the Southwest Monsoon is projected to hit the Kerala coast by May 25, providing much-needed respite from the prevailing heatwave. Weather experts anticipate the initial atmospheric transitions to become visible as early as May 18. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has noted that the current spell of isolated summer showers is likely to persist through mid-month.

Data reveals a stark rainfall deficit this season. Against a normal average of 136.3 mm (March 1 – April 29), the state recorded only 73.5 mm, marking a 46% shortfall. While Kozhikode and Pathanamthitta maintained near-normal levels, districts like Malappuram, Palakkad, and Idukki faced severe deficits exceeding 60%. Lakshadweep remains the worst hit with a 91% drop in seasonal rain.

Immediate Weather Warning: Isolated thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds (40–50 km/h) are expected across the state until Thursday. A Yellow Alert is currently active for Idukki, Palakkad, and Wayanad. Authorities warn of heavy rainfall reaching up to 115.5 mm in these regions within a 24-hour window.

Power Demand Eases: The recent showers have successfully cooled temperatures, leading to a visible dip in the state's power grid load. After peaking at a record-breaking 6,000 MW earlier this month, evening demand stabilised to 5,344 MW this past Saturday, offering the KSEB a brief period of operational relief.
