Holiday for educational institutions in Thiruvananthapuram as heavy rain lashes capital city, yellow alert in eight districts

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rain is lashing the state. Roads are flooded in many places. In the wake of heavy rains, the Collector has declared a holiday for educational institutions in Thiruvananthapuram. All educational institutions, including professional colleges, will remain closed today. The Collector informed that there will be no change in the scheduled public examinations. The students were stranded after the holiday was announced late. Many came to know about the holiday after leaving homes.


According to the latest radar image, there is a possibility of moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms and strong winds up to 40 kmph in isolated places in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam for the next three hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that there is a possibility of moderate rain and strong winds up to 40 kmph in isolated places in Kollam.


A yellow alert has been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur today. Isolated heavy rain is expected. The IMD defines heavy rain as a situation where rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm is expected in 24 hours. Thunderstorms are expected. Fishing has been banned along the Kerala - Karnataka - Lakshadweep coasts till tomorrow.
