THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KSEB delivered a big blow to seven lakh domestic consumers who use more than 250 units of electricity per month. A decision was made to collect the 25 per cent extra night-time tariff for the entire year. The nighttime tariff was introduced as an exclusive one for the summer season from April to May. Consumers are still reeling from the unaffordable electricity bills in the past months.
The average rate charged during the night peak hour is Rs 8.39 per unit. The normal rate is Rs 6.90 per unit. There is an offer of a 10% discount during the day for those falling under this category. Domestic consumption is less during the day.
The Time of Day (TOD) system, which imposes different rates during the day and night during the summer, was implemented last April for domestic consumers and small industries with a connected load of less than 20 kilowatts. This was introduced when the electricity consumption increased sharply during the summer while the state was on the brink of facing a power crisis. This was also to avoid having to purchase more electricity from outside at higher rates. The Electricity Regulatory Commission also gave its approval for the plan.
KSEB explained that the additional load was imposed throughout the year to reduce night load and encourage maximum use of solar power, including during the day. Out of the seven lakh TOD customers, 1.45 lakh are also Purappura solar customers.
