THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the approval of the National Medical Commission for the Wayanad and Kasaragod medical colleges, 100 students will be able to study medicine at government fees in both colleges. However, the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA) pointed out that the approval was obtained by temporarily transferring teachers from other medical colleges, and the required teaching posts have not yet been created in the new colleges.
50 teaching posts and eight senior resident posts need to be created in Kasaragod Medical College, and 17 teaching posts and 10 senior resident posts in Wayanad Medical College. Permission was obtained by temporarily transferring 19 teachers to Wayanad Medical College and 38 teachers to Kasaragod Medical College. Six teachers were also transferred to Konni Medical College, Pathanamthitta. This has exacerbated the shortage of teachers in the other medical colleges. The KGMCTA is also warning that this could lead to the loss of recognition for PG courses in these medical colleges.
Minister Veena George hailed the approval of Wayanad and Kasaragod Medical Colleges as a historic feat. During this government's tenure, 21 nursing colleges were also started in the government and non-government sectors. The 478 B.Sc. Nursing seats in the government sector were increased to 1060. There are a total of more than 10300 B.Sc. Nursing seats.
