MALAPPURAM: A masked gang robbed an elderly woman of her gold jewelry after throwing chilli powder on her face. A chain of two sovereigns belonging to Chandramathi (63), who was staying alone at her house in Ambalappadi bypass, was stolen. She sustained injuries while trying to prevent them from the act. She was attacked last night at 9 pm.

Chandramathi came out of the house after hearing a loud noise. She first thought that a coconut may have fallen on top of the drinking water tank. As soon as she came out after switching on the light on the side of her kitchen, two people smeared chilli powder on her face and body. Another person covered her mouth. When the attempt to remove the bangles from her hand failed, they used a plier to cut it. In the meantime, the thieves pushed her to the ground and escaped from there.

When Chandramathi, who was lying on the ground, made a noise, her relatives living in nearby houses came running. On being informed, the police and locals immediately searched the nearby areas, but could not find them. The police reached the spot this morning and conducted a detailed inspection. Chandramathi is wife of late retired soldier Vijayakumar.
