THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The central government has included the Vizhinjam port in the list of India’s official international seaports. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also approved an Integrated Check Post (ICP) for international passenger movement and cargo handling. Minister VN Vasavan said that this approval will help speed up Vizhinjam’s development as a major international port. Procedures such as crew changes will now become easier, and the port’s cargo movement will also become faster.

A major share of South India’s imports and exports can now be handled directly through Vizhinjam without depending on foreign hubs like Colombo. With deep-sea capability and facilities to receive some of the world’s largest ships, Vizhinjam will emerge as a globally competitive Indian Ocean gateway. This recognition will strengthen Vizhinjam’s place on the global maritime map and support Kerala’s economic growth, Vasavan added.
