‘Chief Minister must not cry’: Mentor’s wife comforts an emotional V.D. Satheesan
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a poignant moment ahead of assuming office as the new Chief Minister of Kerala, Congress leader V.D. Satheesan paid a visit to the residence of his late political mentor and former minister, G. Karthikeyan, in Shasthamangalam.
The Chief Minister-designate was visibly overcome with emotion as he paid his respects, drawing words of comfort from Karthikeyan’s widow, Dr. M.T. Sulekha. "A Chief Minister must remain steadfast; a Chief Minister should not shed tears," Dr. Sulekha was heard consoling him.
Expressing his deep reverence, Satheesan credited the late leader for his political trajectory. "It was Karthikeyan Sir who guided my entry into mainstream politics. I owe everything to him, and this family will always be my own," Satheesan remarked. He recalled that it was Karthikeyan who advocated for his legislative candidacy to veteran leaders A.K. Antony and K. Karunakaran during the 1996 and 2001 assembly elections, firmly believing he would be a vital asset to the party.
Dr. Sulekha expressed immense pride in Satheesan's ascent to the state's highest office, noting that her late husband had recognised Satheesan’s exceptional leadership potential early on. She extended her blessings for a successful and memorable tenure as Chief Minister.
During the visit, Satheesan also interacted with Karthikeyan’s son, K.S. Sabarinadhan, and other family members, including his grandchildren. Notable cultural figures, including actor Jagadish and film producer Renjith, were also present at the residence.
