Next challenge is cabinet formation; what position will Congress offer Ramesh Chennithala to end discontent?
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After days of uncertainty and intense discussions, V. D. Satheesan has finally been chosen as the next Chief Minister of Kerala. The Congress high command announced the decision ten days after the Assembly election results were declared, ending prolonged speculation and internal disagreements within the party. With the leadership issue settled, the Congress now faces the crucial task of forming the new cabinet. At the same time, the party leadership must also address the dissatisfaction of senior leader Ramesh Chennithala, who is reportedly unhappy over being overlooked for the Chief Minister’s post.
The cabinet formation process is expected to be a delicate balancing act. The party will have to consider community representation while also ensuring opportunities for youth, women, and experienced leaders. Congress leaders are keen to avoid further controversies and delays similar to those witnessed during the Chief Minister selection process. Indications from the party suggest that the full cabinet is likely to be sworn in on Monday.
Sources say Chennithala is deeply disappointed that he was not considered for the top post despite his seniority and continued loyalty to the party. It is learnt that he has conveyed his displeasure to the Congress high command. During the final phase of the Oommen Chandy government, Chennithala had stepped down as KPCC president to take charge of the Home Department. However, after missing out on the Chief Ministership this time, he is reportedly reluctant to become part of the new ministry.
There is speculation that the Congress may offer him the Speaker’s post as a compromise, though sources indicate that Chennithala may not be willing to accept the position. Significantly, he also stayed away from the parliamentary party meeting held today. As things stand, the Congress leadership’s biggest challenge is finding a suitable role for Chennithala and bringing him back into confidence while ensuring unity within the party ahead of the new government taking office.
