KOCHI: Kerala ranks first in the country in terms of abdominal obesity and second in overall obesity, according to population-based data. The finding comes from a 12-year study conducted jointly by the Indian Council of Medical Research and India Diabetes. As per the survey, 58.2% of people in Kerala have abdominal obesity. Punjab (57.2%) is in second place and Haryana (56.9%) in third.

Puducherry ranks first in overall obesity on a population basis (45.9%), followed by Kerala (43.6%) and Delhi (41.8%). The national average stands at 39.5% for abdominal obesity and 28.6% for overall obesity. Men with a waist circumference above 90 cm (35 inches) and women above 80 cm (31 inches) are classified under abdominal obesity. The study report was tabled in Parliament by the Union Health Ministry, and it warns that such health problems are likely to increase in the future.

Unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise, and sedentary jobs are cited as the main reasons for rising obesity and belly fat. While individuals need to make lifestyle changes, government-level action plans are also being implemented. Awareness campaigns on healthy eating and the importance of physical activity are being promoted through initiatives like the “Eat Right Movement” by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and the “Fit India Movement” of the central government. Health fairs, yoga camps, and free medical camps are also being conducted under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases.

Considered a medical condition
Modern medicine no longer views obesity merely as a lifestyle issue but as a disease condition. It can lead to heart disease, diabetes, joint pain, and sleep disorders. Experts advise limiting foods high in salt, sugar, fat, and carbohydrates. Regular exercise, reduced stress, and adequate sleep are also essential for maintaining good health.
