PUSHKAR: The Pushkar mela in Rajasthan, the world's largest cattle fair, ended yesterday. Kuber, a buffalo owned by farmer Vikas Kumar, won first place in the championship competition at the fair. The Rajasthan government announced a special award for Kuber and his owner, Vikas Kumar.
Kuber arrived at the Pushkar fair on Saturday. On the first day, traders offered Kuber a price of Rs 11 crore. Later, on Monday, traders from Andhra Pradesh increased the bid to Rs 21 crore. Despite the engrossing offer, Vikas refused to sell Kuber. Vikas says that Kuber is not only a source of income for him but also a pride. At the same time, he said that instead of selling Kuber, he will prepare good-quality semen and store it in a semen bank to make it available to farmers at a fair price. This will generate an income of lakhs of rupees per month. This will also help other farmers get buffaloes of the same breed. Vikas said that already, there are demands for semen from Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan.
Kuber, who is three and a half years old, is 5.5 feet tall. Earlier, Kuber's mother had won a district-level competition organised by the Animal Husbandry Department for producing 23.5 litres of milk. Vikas said that Kuber is fed pulses, peas, milk, curd and ghee. The demand for Kuber increased soon after the death of Yuvraj, Haryana's most famous Murrah bull.
