THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM state secretary M V Govindan said that the party's defeat in the assembly elections was unexpected. Speaking at a press conference, he said the party would hold meetings with all its units, listen to the views of members, and make necessary corrections to stage a comeback.

"CPM got 37.6 votes in this election. This is a relatively low voting percentage. The party had received 35.1 percent in the 2019 elections and 35.29 per cent in 2024. Only a preliminary review of the election was carried out at the Secretariat meeting today. The party plans to convene meetings of all units during May and June to hear the opinion of members. Party workers should be able to express their views freely and without fear," Govindan said.

He said the party’s election review would be prepared after consulting all sections, including feedback from workers and the public.

“We will make all necessary corrections and move forward,” he said.

However, apart from commenting on the election defeat, Govindan did not respond to other questions from the media and quickly ended the press conference. He also did not give any indication about who would be the next Leader of the Opposition.
