Manipur horror video

manipur

Amidst the turbulence in Manipur, a video emerged two days back which has shaken the conscience of millions in India. The horrific video saw two women from the Kuki community being paraded naked down the streets by a violent mob. Some heinous minds from the mob touched the women's privates and slapped them mercilessly. The horror reached a nadir when one of the two women captured was taken to a field nearby to be gang-raped by the same mob. The Supreme Court took cognizance of the issue and asked the state or central government to act in haste. The SC in an unusually perturbed way warned of a suo moto case if the government shows lax.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is stoic in most situations decided to break the silence this time. “ 140 crore Indians were shamed seeing what has happened to the daughters of Manipur. No guilty will be spared. I’m standing with utmost anguish and anger.” PM Modi stated.

Whenever there happens a riot or violence, children and women are destined to endure the worst. It is the onus of the government to blanket the women and children community to safety. However, political lenience and bias clog up during such trying times and will open gift calamities akin to what has transpired in Manipur. Even in the very first week of the riot, the state government's lousy approach was palpable. The central government should have dismissed the government in a go, to prudently invoke the president's rule. It would have ameliorated tensions and Manipur would have been a far better abode than the crumbling mess it is today. According to the state government's report, 142 people died in the skirmishes over months and a total of 17 are reported missing. However, the unofficial numbers say the deaths can easily surpass 300.

Now, people across the country, especially in the south are expressing their vehemence over BJP's ineptness in Manipur and are crucifying PM Modi for the disaster. It is a deceiving act or it is the naivete of people who have zero know-how of what happened in Manipur. It was the HC decision of April 19 that actually ignited the riot but not any political party. Even the SC rebuked the HC's stance and asked the judges to exercise caution and show intellect when dealing with any such volatile cases. PM Modi meanwhile adopted saint-like silence which went awry and never met its target. More people were killed and the attack couldn't be doused even after three months. The court's observation also questioned whether this was an isolated incident or if there had been similar occurrences in Manipur before. It warned the central and state governments that the violation of the Constitution and human rights was unacceptable and demanded swift action. The court made it clear that the time elapsed since the occurrence does not diminish the seriousness of the matter. The government has been directed to provide a report on the steps taken since the beginning of the communal riots in May.
