NEW DELHI: According to the University Grants Commission (UGC), 20 universities operating in India are fake. Among this, majority unlicensed institutes are functioning in Delhi. Eight universities belong to this category.
UGC Secretary Manish Joshi said that these institutes are offering degrees in violation of the UGC Act. He clarified that degrees obtained from these universities will not be recognized for higher education or employment purposes.
Delhi tops the list
Delhi tops the list of fake universities. Eight firms are operating without permission in Delhi. Uttar Pradesh has four, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal two each, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Puducherry each.
All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences, Commercial University Limited, Daryaganj, United Nations University, Vocational University, ADR, Indian Institute of Science and Engineering, Vishwakarma Open University, Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya (Spiritual University) in Delhi etc. are unauthorized universities functioning in Delhi.
Four universities like Gandhi Hindi Vidyapeeth, National University of Electro Complex Homeopathy, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University (Open University) and Bharatiya Shiksha Parishad are operating without permission in Uttar Pradesh. Christ New Testament Deemed University of Andhra Pradesh, Bible Open University of India, Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine, Institute of Alternative Medicine and Research, West Bengal, Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society in Karnataka, St. John's University in Kerala, Raja Arabic University in Maharashtra, Sri Bodhi Academy of Higher Education in Puducherry is also among the unlicensed universities.
