AGARTALA: The CPM, which suffered a defeat to the Congress in the by-election in Kerala, has now suffered a big defeat in the by-election in Tripura as well. The CPM candidate was able to get only 3909 votes in Boxanagar, the sitting seat of the party. BJP candidate Tafajjal Hossain won the seat by a majority of 30,237 votes.
Boxanagar seat had fallen vacant following the death of CPM MLA Samsul Haque. In the by-election, BJP candidate Tafajjal Hossain got 34146 votes, whereas Samsul Haque's son Mizan Hossan managed to get only 3909 votes. Boxanagar has been the sitting seat of the CPM since 2003. The BJP also managed to record a great win in the by-election held in Dhanpur constituency. The BJP's Bindu Debnath won the Dhanpur seat by 18,871 votes. Debnath received 30,017 votes, while CPI (M) candidate Kaushik Chanda got 11,146 votes. The polls for both seats were held on Tuesday, September 5.
