7.5 magnitude earthquake hits Philippines, Tsunami warning issued

MANILA: A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit Mindanao in the Philippines on Saturday. The US Tsunami Warning Division has issued a tsunami warning following the earthquake. The epicentre is about 63 km below Earth in Mindanao, 893 km from Manila.

Tsunami warnings were issued for the Philippines, Palau, Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan based on the epicentre of the earthquake. On November 17, the south part of Mindanao was hit by a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7. But no damage was reported that day. The Philippines is located between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea in the western Pacific Ocean. The area is an active volcanic region known as the 'Ring of Fire' and is prone to earthquakes.

Meanwhile, an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale occurred in Bangladesh on Saturday at 9.05 am IST. No casualties or damage were reported. The quake was at a depth of 10 km from the Earth's surface. The epicenter is eight kilometers east of Ranganj in Lakshmipur district. The tremor was felt in the capital Dhaka and in West Bengal, Tripura, Mizoram and Assam in India. An earthquake was also felt in Ladakh in India at 8.25 am. The quake measured 3.4 on the Richter scale.
