Covid JN-1; Tests including RT PCR should be done widely, center advises states to be cautious

NEW DELHI: The Center has issued a warning to states about the spread of a new Covid-19 variant, JN-1. Plans are underway to increase inspections, including RTPCR testing in institutions. Strict monitoring of the disease's spread is proposed on a district level. Adequate testing and ensuring a sufficient number of tests are recommended. Cases testing positive will be sent for genetic sequencing at INSACOG (Indian SARS COV-2 Genomics Consortium) laboratories.

In response, the Center convened a review meeting to evaluate state-wise disease spread and preventive measures. This directive follows the discovery of JN1, a subtype of Covid notably in Kerala.

JN1 has been identified in a single person in Kerala, a 79-year-old from Thiruvananthapuram, Karakulam. Minister Veena George confirmed successful home treatment leading to his recovery. Addressing unnecessary panic amid rising Covid cases, she highlighted the slight increase in samples sent for genome sequencing revealing JN1's presence last month. Among 15 people arriving from India in Singapore, JN1 was detected during inspections indicating its spread beyond Kerala.

Notably, the deceased person in Kerala had other severe illnesses, not succumbing to Covid. Their admission to the hospital was due to gangrene. The misinterpretation of this case should not create undue fear among the public. The Minister stressed the importance for elderly and people with underlying health conditions to seek immediate medical attention, not solely focusing on Covid-19 concerns.

Regular checks for ICU beds, ventilators, isolation wards, oxygen beds and rooms' availability are underway to ensure adequate facilities. The Minister assured the public of continuous availability of these essential resources.
