Drink tea and eat cups; 65-year-old entrepreneur's unique business success

THRISSUR: Varghese from Maala, Kundur, Ilavathinkal, a 65-year-old entrepreneur has introduced an eco-friendly solution to replace traditional plastic cups gaining traction locally and internationally. His millet cups available in various flavors like chocolate, cardamom, biscuit, vanilla and for the Sabarimala season - dried ginger and black pepper-infused are becoming a hit among consumers.

Based in Kariyattu at Nedumbassery Airport Junction, Varghese's manufacturing unit produces these cups using a blend of ragi, rice flour, regular flour, corn, sugar and ghee heated at 300 degrees and molded by specialized machinery. These cups are not only suitable for enjoying tea but also serve as unique holders for ice cream.

Furthermore, another company in Tamil Nadu crafts teacups from groundnut shells, adding to the array of environmentally friendly options in the market.

Varghese's entrepreneurial journey began with setbacks in a venture involving machinery from Hyderabad for tea cups that required oil mixing. With the assistance of his friend, mechanical engineer Joy and insights from food industry experts, they successfully developed a cup holder rigorously tested in labs to ensure quality.

Since commencing operations in 2021, Varghese's venture has made a significant impact with a sales figure of 1.2 lakhs monthly producing up to 25,000 cups per day. The prices range from 8 rupees per cup for tea to 3.90 rupees per cup for ice cream available through dealers or by order.

Returning to India a decade ago after working in Mumbai and abroad, Varghese alongside his wife Rose Lee, continues to steer this innovative business with their children Tony and Anu Filda also involved in the venture.
