SHARJA: Sharjah is an emirate that celebrates New Year's Day with great pomp. However, in solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, fireworks have been omitted from New Year's celebrations this year. Sharjah Police informed about this through their X page. The police have also warned that legal action will be taken against those who violate the ban. The police issued the warning yesterday.

Fireworks are prohibited during the celebration as part of solidarity and humanitarian cooperation with our brothers in the Gaza Strip, police said. Sharjah is the third largest emirate in the UAE in terms of size and population.

Taking advantage of Christmas and New Year, there is extortion in the name of ticket price hikes in the sky and on the ground. Due to this, the expatriates are abandoning their journey to the country. A family of four from Jeddah needs about two and a half lakh rupees to reach home. Ticket rates now are 70,000 - 80,000 rupees for economy class, which is usually 25,000 rupees. New York - Kochi costs Rs 1,80,000 - 2,20,000. Normally Rs 75,000 - 85,000 would have been enough. London - Kochi is 1,60,000, normal rates are Rs.50,000.
