Camera confusion behind AI 'Ghosts'

ghost

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: People who are not present appear. Those who are actually present disappear. When the 'ghost figures' lurking in AI cameras are being discussed again, experts point to the camera's technical failure as the culprit. Two months ago in Payyannoor, Kannur, when a woman was fined for not wearing a seat belt, there were rumours that the female figure seen in the back seat was a 'ghost'. However, the motor vehicle department gave an explanation that it was a boy was in the back seat. The man and his mother's sister were in front and two children were in the back seat. While the woman's figure was captured, the children's figure was not captured in the picture. Experts say that such incidents happen at night. The camera captures images through IR sensors. Images of vehicles and occupants not wearing seat belts and helmets will be captured using machine learning and stored in a database.

However, capturing and storing video can make a difference of seconds when vehicles pass by at high speed. Due to the camera getting 'confused', the image of the passenger in the previous vehicle may appear in the second vehicle.

Accuracy is not 100%

One hundred percent accuracy is not possible with AI technology. As many as 10 out of 1000 cameras manufactured by the same company may be defective. Apart from the incident in Payyannur, a ghost figure was also seen in a vehicle in Kannur's Uruvachal. The news spread that it was the figure of a woman who had committed suicide nearby. As both the problems are in the same place, the camera may be at fault. The Department of Motor Vehicles has informed that there is no mystery in the Payyannur incident.
