Conflict during Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra; Assam CM directs police to register case against Rahul Gandhi

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed the police to register a case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi MP. The police had earlier stopped the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi after it entered Guwahati. Following this, the Congress workers destroyed the barricades put up by the police outside Guwahati city. This prompted the Assam Chief Minister to give directions to take action against Rahul Gandhi. However, Rahul Gandhi said that Congress workers did not violate any laws.

In a post on social media platform X, Chief Minister Sarma said "Naxalite tactics" were alien to Assam's culture.

"These are not part of Assamese culture. We are a peaceful state. Such "Naxalite tactics" are completely alien to our culture. I have instructed DGP Assam Police to register a case against your leader Rahul Gandhi for provoking the crowd and use the footage you have posted on your handles as evidence. Your unruly behaviour and violation of agreed guidelines have resulted in a massive traffic jam in Guwahati now," Sarma said on X.

The yatra resumed today from Jorabat in Assam. As permission was denied to travel through the city of Guwahati through the pre-arranged routes, the Yatra moved through the Guwahati Bypass to avoid the possibility of conflict. Heavy security was deployed at Khanapara Area, the entry point of Guwahati for the Yatra earlier this morning. A large number of police were present at the scene to stop the yatra from entering Guwahati. The barricades put up as part of the security measures were destroyed by the Congress workers. There were nearly 5000 Congress workers with Rahul Gandhi.
