Textbooks ready 81 days early; General Education Department and Minister V Sivankutty wins applause of children

3

In the olden days, there were only textbooks for learning. Today, there are many new learning tools available such as computers, mobile phones, and online classes. Despite all this, most students still rely on textbooks for learning. Earlier, the textbooks used to reach the hands of the children with a delay of several months after the start of the academic year. At that time, there used to be constant news like 'Textbook printing delayed, distribution of textbooks can be completed only after onam'. Making it all a memory of the old days, this time the education department has started the distribution of textbooks 81 days before the start of the academic year.

The Department of General Education and the Department Minister V Sivankutty have won the applause of the children in this regard. One crore eighty lakh textbooks will be distributed in the first phase. These are unrevised textbooks. The minister has informed that revised textbooks will be released in the month of May itself. Often the Left government in the state is unable to agree with all the education reforms of the central government. However, it is also welcome that Kerala has been able to prepare alternative textbooks, anticipating that these political differences should not adversely affect the children's learning and future. While NCERT made changes and cuts in History, Political Science, Economics and Sociology books, they are being included in special textbooks for Class 11 and 12.

In History Mughal History, Industrial Revolution, Indian History etc. and in Political Science Gandhiji's Martyrdom, Five Year Plans, Emergency and People's Struggle in India were included in the alternative textbooks. These lessons were included in the alternative books as they were deemed essential to understanding the values of the Constitution and providing the children with a true picture of India. Just as important as books being delivered on time is ensuring that study days are not missed. It can be expected that there will be due caution from the General Education Department.

Printing the Preamble to the Constitution at the beginning of all textbooks and ensuring that children learn it are very good things. This should help in instilling a sense of democracy and citizenship in the children. Along with this, the minister's announcement that a special period will be introduced in schools for newspaper reading and book reading is a positive reform measure to raise the intellectual level of children. A proposal to introduce grace marks for newspaper reading was raised in a meeting of newspaper editors and media workers convened by the minister. The minister said that he would consider the matter. Children will take newspaper reading more seriously if grace marks are introduced. It will be the basis for them to grow up to be good citizens of the future.
