The heartthrob of the 2000 era, actress Jyothika is slowly getting active in films and has got her kitty full of offers. The actress was recently seen opposite Mammootty in ‘Kaathal’ which ended up getting high praise from critics. And now, the actress will be seen in the Bollywood flick ‘Srikanth’ alongside Rajkumar Rao, Alaya F and Sharad Kelkar. The press meet held for promoting the movie in Chennai skittered off from topic and ended up awry for the actress, who made a gaffe regarding the Indian elections. Jyothika is currently being subjected to sardonic trolls on social media for her ludicrous understanding of the elections in India.
While at the event, a reporter quizzed the actress about her decision not to vote in the recent elections in Tamil Nadu. Jyothika is mostly known for selecting message-driven movies so the reporter was keen to question her decision to stay away from one of the biggest festivals of a democracy.
What came next appalled the reporters and others in the press meeting. Jyothika immediately responded saying that she voted every year. Somebody had to intervene and correct her that elections happen only once in five years in India. Jyothika immediately corrected her error and then went on with a far worse drivel on elections.
“I vote online because we don’t get time to reach and vote. We may be sick sometimes or we may be out of station. There should be a private side of our life that needs to be respected” Jyothika quipped.
Jyothika’s comments elicited troll fest on social media platform X. Many drew parallels with Alia Bhatt, known for making inane comments on television shows. Some others took the case sardonically and tagged the election commission to make a similar provision available for other Indians.
“You’re a special breed to be educated, & remain hilariously dumb. #Jyotika - You can’t sit at home privately & press a button on a keyboard to vote. This is not Big Boss. It’s okay to abstain from voting, but what hilarious excuses!” another user wrote on X.
Respected Jyothika Mam – Can you please educate me on online voting!

Mam, looks like you are the brand ambassador of a new policy decision taken by the government – online voting!
Could you kindly throw more light?
It will help poor people like me who cannot afford to do… pic.twitter.com/65EwEf8AAK
