ALAPPUZHA : NDA candidate Shobha Surendran from Alappuzha has won significant votes even from the strongholds of CPM. It is estimated that sectarianism in CPM in areas including Kayamkulam and and anti-incumbency have turned into votes for Shobha.
NDA won clear upper hand in Haripad, Kayamkulam and Karunagappally assembly constituencies. Shobha Surendran secured 5,352 votes than AM Arif in Haripad. Arif trailed by 755 votes in Kayamkulam. In Karunagappally constituency, Arif managed to get only 191 votes more than Shobha.
CPM, which was in the first position in Kayamkulam constituency in the last Lok Sabha and assembly elections, is the reason behind the third position this time. CPM was surprised when NDA won the upper hand in Pathiyur, Devikulangara and Chettikulangara panchayats which were CPM strongholds. In Pathiyur, 996 votes, 996 votes in Devikungara, 1000 votes in Chettikulangara and 286 votes in Kandallur.
