KANNUR: After the Election Commission lifted the model code of conduct, parole has been granted to the convicts, except Kodi Suni and Anoop, in the TP Chandrasekharan murder case. Convicts Manoj, Rajeesh, Mohammad Shafi, Sijith and Sinoj were granted parole from Kannur Central Jail. The Kannur Central Jail authorities clarified that parole was granted to those who submitted their applications before the elections.
Their application was approved by the Jail Advisory Committee last March. But they could not go out as the model code of conduct was in force. The explanation of the prison department for the parole after the MCC was lifted is that it is only a natural step. The convicts are eligible for 60 days of regular parole and 45 days of special parole. Officials informed that the decision of the Jail Advisory Committee is based on the application.
In 2022, the government had revealed in the Assembly that the accused in the TP Chandrasekaran murder case were granted 2013 days of parole after the LDF government came to power. 11 accused were granted parole for up to 6 months several times in addition to hospitalization during imprisonment.
