IMD warns of heavy rains with thunder in state, alert issued

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that there is a possibility of rain with thunder and lightning at isolated places in all the districts of Kerala in the next three hours. The department also said that there is a possibility of strong winds with a speed of up to 40 km per hour.


Yellow alert has been sounded today in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. A chance of isolated heavy rain has been predicted. Heavy rains mean rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours. The central meteorological department has banned fishing in the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts today and tomorrow.


The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Center has informed that there is a possibility of Kallakadal phenomenon and high waves along the coast of Kerala and Tamil Nadu till 11.30 tonight. Fishermen and coastal residents in these areas should exercise special caution.


Warning
1. As the rough seas are likely to intensify, stay away from the danger areas as per the instructions of the authorities.

2. Keep fishing vessels safely moored in the harbor. Keeping a safe distance between boats can avoid the possibility of collision. Safety of fishing equipment should be ensured.

3. Avoid trips to the beach and activities at sea completely.
