KOLKATA: Five passengers have died and 25 others injured after an express train collided with a goods train in Darjeeling of West Bengal Monday morning. The accident happened when Kanchenjunga Express going to Sealdah in Kolkata from Silchar in Assam was hit by the goods train from behind near New Jalpaiguri.
It is reported that two coaches of Kanchenjunga Express derailed in the accident. No details have been released.
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee informed through X that doctors and disaster relief forces have reached the spot. Mamata's note said that she was shocked when heard about the incident and that ambulance and all arrangements for rescue operations have been done.
The Kanchanjunga Express is a daily train that connects Bengal with the Northeastern cities of Silchar and Agartala. The train is frequently used by tourists to travel to Darjeeling.
