TEHRAN: Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Iran. Hamas in a statement released has confirmed the death. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have also confirmed his death, saying Haniyeh’s residence in Tehran was hit and he was killed along with a bodyguard.
Meanwhile, Hamas has accused Israel for the killing. However, Israel has not responded. Iran has clarified to investigate the incident. Haniyeh arrived in Iran to attend the swearing-in of Iran’s new president Masoud Pezeshkian.
There were reports that Israel had vowed to kill Haniyeh and destroy the Hamas group after the October 7 attack that resulted in the deaths of 1195 people, mostly civilians. It is not clear whether his killing was part of executing that oath. Israeli spy agencies have an extraordinary ability to infiltrate any country without anyone knowing and target their enemies. The world was shocked to learn that Israel was not aware of the arrival of Hamas across the border despite the presence of so many rumored spy organizations.
Reacting to Haniyeh's killing, Israeli Minister Amichay Eliyahu posted on ‘X’ that ‘this is the right way to clean the world from this filth.
