The decision by the cabinet to abolish the all-pass system in state public schools is a commendable step towards improving the quality of education. For years, students have been promoted to higher classes despite scoring as low as ten percent on their exams, leading to a severe decline in educational standards. This lenient approach has resulted in students passing even the SSLC exams, which are supposed to represent basic educational competence, without mastering essential skills. Consequently, many students, even after passing Class 10, struggle with basic writing and comprehension.

This new directive, requiring a minimum of 30 percent marks in written tests for promotion to the next class, addresses this issue head-on. Implemented immediately for Class 8 students and extending to Class 9 next year, this reform is set to fully apply to the SSLC by 2027. Although the decision faces opposition from teachers' unions and student organizations, the government must stand firm, as this is a critical reform for the future of students.

The continuation of the all-pass system since 1977 has undoubtedly done more harm than good, leading to the degradation of educational quality. It's not surprising that the system has been criticized, even by officials in the educational sector. Under the current regime, students who pass with minimal effort are often unprepared for higher studies and competitive exams, causing significant disadvantages in their academic and professional futures.

The new policy allows students who fail a subject to retake the exam within two weeks, giving them a fair opportunity to meet the minimum required marks. Teachers are expected to provide the necessary support to help students succeed in these retakes. By ending the all-pass system, the government is taking a crucial step toward ensuring that students are truly equipped with the knowledge and skills needed for higher education and beyond. This reform is not just beneficial but essential for the overall betterment of society.
