ABU DHABI: The insurance scheme Life Protection Plan (LPP), introduced for Indian expatriates in the UAE is gaining acceptance. More than 5,500 expatriates have become members of the Life Protection Plan (LPP), which was launched on March 1 this year.
In case of death of an Indian expatriate working in the UAE, the family will receive a compensation of 75,000 dirhams (approximately Rs 17 lakhs). The Indian Consulate in Dubai has clarified that the compensation will be given in case of natural death or accidental death.
While many companies provided health insurance and compensation for work-related deaths and injuries, natural death was not covered. As a result, when the worker died, the family faced severe financial crisis. Taking this into account, the decision to introduce the new insurance scheme was made in discussions conducted by the Indian Consulate in Dubai involving various companies and insurance providers in the UAE. However, currently workers cannot voluntarily join this scheme. The employer or the company has to enroll the workers in the scheme.
The plan offers comprehensive coverage including worldwide coverage to employees with a UAE work visa. Natural death, accidental death and total or partial disability due to an accident are also covered. The scheme also covers up to Dh12,000 for the repatriation of the deceased worker's body. Coverage is available to individuals between the ages of 18 and 70 years. Those who pay AED 72 per annum will get a compensation of AED 75,000. A loss compensation of 50,000 dirhams for 50 dirhams and 35,000 dirhams for 37 dirhams is available under the scheme.
According to the Indian Consulate, around 3.5 million Indians live in the UAE. 65 percent of them are blue-collar workers. In 2022, 1750 Indian expatriates died in Dubai. 1100 of them are labourers. Last year, 1513 Indian expatriates died in the UAE. 1000 of them are labourers. More than 90 percent of these deaths were due to natural causes, according to the consulate's reports.
