KANNUR: Umair Ashraf, a madrasa teacher from Tanur in Malappuram, has been arrested by Kannavam police on charges of brutally assaulting a student. According to reports, the teacher allegedly burned the student, a native of Vizhinjam, with an iron and subjected him to further severe abuse.
The assault, which reportedly took place last September, was sparked when the student was accused of not paying adequate attention to his studies. Alongside being burned, the student alleged he was tortured with crushed green chilies applied to his private parts and beaten with a stick.
Following the filing of a police complaint, Ashraf fled Kerala and went into hiding across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. However, police recently received confidential information regarding his return to the state. An investigation team subsequently tracked his movements, camping in Malappuram to intercept him. Upon spotting the officers, Ashraf attempted to escape but was quickly apprehended.
