SINGAPORE: India's D Gukesh was crowned the 18th World Chess Champion on Friday. Gukesh received the World Chess Champion medal and trophy from FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich at the closing ceremony held in Singapore today.
"It feels like I've lived this moment a million times. Every single day, I woke up and did every small thing for this one moment. Holding this trophy and experiencing this moment means more to me than anything else in my life." Gukesh said after receiving the medal and trophy.
"There have been many ups and downs in my life, and I've had some beautiful moments and some tough situations, but none of that has changed my life until now," Gukesh said.
Gukesh also heaped praises on his opponent, former champion Ding Liren from China, for putting up a tough fight. The young champion expressed his pride in representing the country and thanked his fans.
