KOCHI: Skeletal remains found in the fridge of a locked-up house near Pala Square in Eruveli have been identified as the skulls and bones of multiple women. The discovery was made during a forensic examination by experts.
The Chottanikkara Police, investigating the case, stated that the labels on the skulls and bones suggest they were used for academic purposes. They added that the remains appear to have been in use for several years. The exact age of the remains can be determined only through forensic testing.
The skulls and bones were found packed inside a cover. Police discovered them during an investigation prompted by a complaint from Panchayat member Indira Dharmaraj, who reported anti-social activities occurring in the compound. The property has since been sealed by the police, who completed the inquest and transported the remains to the police station.
The house, situated in the Eruveli-Thuppampadi region, belongs to Dr Philip Mangalasery, a psychiatrist in Ernakulam. The ancestral property spans over 14 acres and has been abandoned for years, with overgrown vegetation covering the compound. Dr Mangalasery has not visited the house in a long time. Police have collected the statements of Dr Mangalasery, his family, and his neighbours.
The house, located in an isolated area with no nearby homes, had its kitchen door in a decomposed state. Household items and furniture were found inside, but the electricity connection had been severed years ago.
The compound is a known haunt for anti-social elements at night. During the New Year celebrations, several unfamiliar people were reportedly seen in the vicinity. Acting on complaints from local residents, the Panchayat member sought police assistance, leading to the discovery. Police have initiated an investigation into those using the property for anti-social activities.
