NEW DELHI: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a fine of Rs 30 lakh on Air India, a Tata Group-owned airline. The fine was imposed after it was found that Air India had failed to comply with the DGCA's guidelines. Show-cause notices were sent to the airline's head of operations, head of rostering and other senior officials. The DGCA took action after Air India did not give a satisfactory reply to this.

Some actions taken by Air India on the 29th of last month are what led to the imposition of the fine. Air India operated one flight, made 3 take-offs and landings even though there were no requirements, which is a violation of the civil aviation guidelines, the DGCA said in the order. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said in the order that "the (rostering) controllers (at Air India) overlooked the multiple spurious alerts reflecting on CAE window, as per the submission made by M/s Air India Limited." "Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred under Rule 162 of the Aircraft Rules, 1937 ... (DGCA) hereby imposes a penalty of Rs 30,00,000..."

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has imposed a fine of Rs 99 lakh on Air India earlier. The fine was for default in the assignment of pilots. The fine of Rs 99 lakh was imposed in the case of a trainee pilot flying a passenger flight without a trainer. The flight from Mumbai to Riyadh was flown by a trainee pilot and another pilot without a trainer.
