NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be having a two-day visit to the United States amid the ongoing controversy over the deportation of illegal immigrants in chains and handcuffs. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced that Narendra Modi will visit the United States on February 12 and 13. Modi will hold bilateral talks with US President Donald Trump and a joint statement will be issued after the talks.
This is Modi's first visit to the US after Donald Trump became the US President for the second time. The Prime Minister will leave for the US after visiting France from February 10 to 12. Modi, who is in France, will attend the AI Summit in Paris.
Misri said that Modi's visit is a sign of the strategic importance of the India-US global relationship. He said that the US is deporting illegal immigrants as per the guidelines. The military plane was allowed to land as per the existing rules. The Foreign Secretary said that the US will be informed that those being deported should not be mistreated. It is also noteworthy that Modi's visit comes at a time when Trump's threat of import tariffs against countries including India is still ongoing.
