BHUBANESWAR: Almost 500 students from Nepal were asked to immediately leave Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) following huge unrest over the alleged suicide of a Nepali girl student.
Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B Tech student from Nepal was found dead in the college hostel on Sunday. It is also suspected that the girl student was in a relationship with another student of KIIT. The victim’s cousin filed a complaint with Infocity police stating that Prakriti was continuously tortured and blackmailed by a male student of the college.
The accused 'boyfriend' is currently in police custody, while all possessions of the victim including her mobile phone have been seized by police for detailed investigation.
Minding the huge protest staged by Nepali students over the death, the college authority issued an order asking all Nepal students to vacate the hostel and college immediately. Videos also surfaced about protesting Nepal students getting roughed up by security guards. It is alleged that the victim had approached the college authorities with complaints several times but only to get chided away.
The students are protesting the college's decision to throw them out despite having exams scheduled for February 28th. Some videos showed two buses ferrying Nepal students to the nearby Cuttack railway station.
