KOZHIKODE: The State Environmental Impact Assessment Committee (SEIAC) has given permission for the construction of the Wayanad tunnel. The SEIAC nod comes with 25 conditions. The committee also directed that the construction of the tunnel in the landslide-prone area should be done with utmost care.
The best technologies should be used for rock drilling. Environmental damage should be avoided. The permission was given after seeking several explanations regarding the project. It has also been directed that the problems of wildlife and humans, including tribals, should be considered. Since the environmental permission has been granted, the government can now proceed with the construction of the tunnel.
CPM state committee member C K Saseendran responded that they will proceed with environmentally friendly developments. The tunnel will take time to build, following the rules and regulations. It will not start tomorrow. Didn't they survive the disaster in Japan, and weren't there protests when the Konkan Corridor was built?
