WASHINGTON: After spending around nine months at the International Space Station, NASA scientists Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore returned to Earth early this morning. Sunita, an Indian-origin, has often made an effort to maintain her connection with India. She has a deep appreciation for Indian cuisine and is also deeply spiritual.
During her space journey, Sunita carried with her an idol of god Ganesha, a Bhagavad Gita and Indian snacks like samosas. Sunita had previously mentioned that she always carries the Bhagavad Gita on all her space missions. She had said that she intended to draw knowledge and strength from the sacred text while orbiting the Earth.
Sunita has also spoken about her devotion to Ganesha, whom she considers a symbol of good fortune. In a past interview with NDTV, she mentioned that she believes God is always with her, guiding her through her journey. This deep faith may have been the inspiration for taking the Ganesha idol on her mission.
Sunita's father Deepak Pandya hails from Mehsana, Gujarat. He immigrated to the United States in 1957. The people of Mehsana are celebrating her safe return, with locals performing prayers and lighting an Akhand Jyot (eternal lamp) in her honour. They are also planning to invite Sunita to visit her hometown in Gujarat.
