THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ongoing protest by ASHA and Anganwadi workers in front of the Secretariat sparked heated discussions in the Assembly on Thursday. Opposition members criticized the government for failing to resolve the stir. In response, Minister P. Rajeev accused the opposition of engaging in narrow politics over the issue. Protesting the government’s stance, opposition MLAs staged a walkout, accusing the ruling front of mocking the protesters and turning down their legitimate demands.
Najeeb Kanthapuram, who moved an adjournment motion, criticized the government for suppressing the protest without even considering that the protestors are women. He alleged that while PSC members and Delhi representative K.V. Thomas are being handed bundles of cash, the government offers nothing but disappointment to the protestors. Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan also pointed out that the protestors are left with nothing but hunger, misery, and suffering. He criticized the government for not paying the Anganwadi workers' pension for the past nine months and for failing to refund the amount they contributed to the welfare fund.
Minister P. Rajeev responded that 60% of the honorarium is supposed to be provided by the central government and 40% by the state, but currently, the state is covering up to 80% of the amount. He added that it is the responsibility of the central government to recognize Anganwadi workers as employees. The government is trying to reduce the number of temporary employees and make permanent appointments, he said.
An amount of Rs 3.9 crore is being spent as pension for 19,629 workers, while the welfare fund contribution stands at Rs 2.10 crore. Four months' benefits are pending. The minister also stated that the Anganwadi workers' wages should be increased properly and that everyone should collectively demand this from the central government.
