Famous television serial actor Mahesh shared a little-known anecdote of veteran actor Thilakan and megastar Mammootty. Mahesh later delved more into his American life, financial debts and how he tackled it all with determination.
MAHESH:
“Thilakan Chettan was a poor soul, but he lacked certain niceties when it came to talking. He would speak his mind out in public without caring for the other person’s feelings. It was his way of doing things. At one meeting, he lashed out at Mammootty which left the veteran actor in tears. It was a rare sight.
AMMA organisation works for the welfare of its members. I need medicine for a month for at least ten to twenty-four thousand rupees. They are sending me medicine for free under a scheme. The general body is also a platform where the new generation and the old generation can meet together. The AMMA Association is my lifeline. Many try to mock them but they still don’t know the value of AMMA.
There are ups and downs in everyone's life. By the late 90s, I was mired in debt and my mother fell ill. Soon my mother died and my financial situation was at rock bottom. With the help of friends, I went to America with my family. I could do any job there and make a living. I intended to return, pay off my debts, and get into films.
In the US, you need to have a good education to succeed in high-paying jobs. I worked in restaurants, did dishes, shovelled snow and even clean bathrooms. Then I got a truck license. This worked for me and I started making money. It was a good job and it paid well. I worked seven days a week and paid off all my debts. After that, I returned to India.”
